Course Syllabus

Course Description: English I is a course that seeks to integrate the standards of reading, writing, viewing and representing, and speaking and listening. Students will work to comprehend and produce a wide variety of texts, including traditional works of literature, practical and persuasive forms of communication that involve speaking and listening skills, and the use of appropriate technology and media forms. The course will emphasize the communication and critical thinking skills that empower students to function effectively in a rapidly changing world. As a ninth grade requirement, students will take the End-of-Course exam at the conclusion of English I. The overall specifications for this test must include reading passages and items with the following characteristics: graphics, color, magazine style layout, multicultural diversity, real-life topics of interest to adolescents, authentic passages, and range of reading levels.

Classroom Expectations: Rules and Procedures

Classroom Rules:

  1. 1. Textbook, binder, paper and black pen must be brought to class daily.
  2. 2. Talking is not permitted unless you are participating in class discussion or group work (then it must be done at an appropriate voice level).
  3. 3. You must be in your seat when the bell rings or you will be issued a tardy.
  4. 4. You must receive permission to get on the floor for any reason.
  5. 5. Cell phones are forbidden in the classroom.  Cell phones must remain off and in the student’s locker while the student is on campus.  Cell phone usage (text messaging, conversation, time, games, etc.) ringing, vibrating, etc., will result in disciplinary action.  Cell phones will be taken and returned to the parent or legal guardian of the student on Monday following the collection of the phone between 2:00-2:30.  Pickup will be in the discipline secretary’s office.  A parent/legal guardian signature (from whom the phone was confiscated) will be required.

1st Offense:  Cell phone taken till the following Monday

2nd Offense:  OSS (2 days)

3rd Offense:  OSS (5 days)

***Insubordination, fighting, or cursing at anyone will result in immediate referral to the grade level administrator.

Classroom Procedures:

  1. 1. Pick up your journal or any worksheet that has been placed on the table nearest the door.
  2. 2. Go directly to your seat and complete bellwork.  Bellwork will be checked 3 minutes after the tardy bell rings.
  3. 3. Complete journal entry.  Journals must be dated and contain 5 sentences.
  4. 4. Make-up work will be in the folder on the bookcase near the door.  Note:  If you miss notes, please get them from a classmate.  Tests will not be placed in the folder.

Consequences for Negative Behavior:

  1. 1. 1st Offense – Verbal reprimand/move to another seat and conduct check.
  2. 2. 2nd Offense – Phone call to parent and conduct check.
  3. 3. 3rd Offense – Referral to guidance or at school parent teacher conference and conduct check.
  4. 4. 4th Offense – Referral to grade level administrator and conduct check.

Conduct Grading:

  • S (Satisfactory) – 3-4 conduct checks.
  • N (Needs Improvement) – 5+ conduct checks

Attendance Policy

The Shelby County Board of Education (Policy #6108) believes that regular attendance is a necessary requirement of all students and that any student with the maturity and interest should be included in some phase of the school program.

All students are expected to attend school on each day that school is officially in session. Only the following reasons will be considered for excused absences:

  • Illness of student.
  • Death or serious illness within the student’s immediate family.
  • When the student is officially representing the school in a school sponsored activity.
  • Special and recognized religious holidays regularly observed by persons of their faith.
  • Legal court summons not as a result of the student’s misconduct.
  • Extenuating circumstances over which the student has no control as approved by the principal.
  • If necessary, verification is required from an official or other source to justify absences.

All other absences than those outlined above shall be considered unexcused.  A written statement, within two (2) school days of the student’s return to school, shall be required from the parent or guardian explaining the reason for each absence.

Make Up Policy

Per Shelby County Schools, students will be allowed 2 make-up days per day missed on excused absences.  Students who do not have excused absences will not be allowed make up work.  Students who are in ISS will be allowed to complete work.  It will be due on the same date as students who are not in ISS.  Students who are in OSS will not be allowed to make up work.

Late Work/Extra Credit Policy

Any work turned in late will automatically result in 10 points being deducted from the final grade.

Bathroom Policy

GO TO THE BATHROOM BETWEEN CLASSES INSTEAD OF PLAYING AROUND OR SOCIALIZING.
